Can I use messaging and calling apps with a data-only plan?
Yes. Apps that use the internet can work over an active M-Mobile data connection.
Apps such as WhatsApp, iMessage, FaceTime, Messenger, Signal, Teams, Zoom, Slack, and email apps use an internet connection instead of traditional carrier voice or SMS. Since M-Mobile data-only plans provide mobile data, these apps can usually work as long as your plan is active, your device is connected, and the app itself is working properly.
This can be useful for travel, remote work, everyday communication, navigation, collaboration, and staying in touch without relying only on public Wi-Fi. M-Mobile provides the data connection, while each app provider controls the app, account, messages, calls, video features, and notifications. Some apps may need to be set up with your phone number, email address, or account login before you travel or before you need to use them. Video calls, file sharing, cloud syncing, and large media messages can use more data than simple text-based messaging.
If you plan to rely on these apps, we recommend installing, updating, and testing them before you need them.
